Sex & Censorship to Hold Public Meeting During XBIZ EU

Sep 5, 2013 10:30 AM PST

LONDON — Sex & Censorship has slated a meeting open to the public on Monday, Sept. 23, at 7 p.m. to discuss opposition to censorship of the Internet and other media.

The meeting will coincide with XBIZ EU, whose organizers have agreed to host it at the conference venue, the Radisson Edwardian Bloomsbury Hotel in central London.

Sex & Censorship says the meeting, called "Keep Britain's Internet Uncensored," aims to provide a common-sense voice in the media to counter panics, provide information to journalists and MPs and ensure that solid academic research and scientific fact are used as the basis of public decision making.

Some of the meeting's talking points include a background to U.K. censorship laws and the filter plans and identification of opposition groups attacking sexual freedoms. It also will discuss the rise in moral panic and the need to counter it and next-step ideas.

Jerry Barnett, who founded Sex & Censorship, will open the meeting and will be followed by stripper and activist Edie Lamort, porn star Karina Currie, obscenity attorney Myles Jackman, the FSC's Diane Duke and Julian Petley, a professor who is an expert on censorship. Others, including a representative from the U.K. Pirate Party, also are slated to speak.

"If you are attending XBIZ EU or are based in or near London, please attend and spread the word as far and wide as possible," Barnett told XBIZ. "To repeat: this is a public event, not just an industry event, but we are hoping for strong industry attendance."

Briton, ranked as one of the top countries for Internet porn consumption, faces, could implement a regulatory plan to limit access to online pornography in the country.

Already, video-on-demand regulatory agency ATVOD has made it a challenge for online adult companies to stream content in the country. And now ATVOD could be going after foreign porn sites that stream content into the U.K.

Two XBIZ EU seminars, "Q&A With ATVOD's Peter Johnson" and "The War on Porn" will focus primarily on the issues of censorship and regulation in the U.K. and beyond.

International digital media conference XBIZ EU brings together business leaders from around the globe for three days of cutting-edge market trend seminars and technology workshops featuring networking special events and A-list guest speakers.

Attendance to "Keep Britain's Internet Uncensored" is free and open to the public on Monday, Sept. 23, at 7 p.m. the Radisson Edwardian Bloomsbury Hotel, 9-14 Bloomsbury St., Bloomsbury, London WC1B 3QD. For additional information, check Sex & Censorship's Facebook page.
